The Barclays Center Excavation and Foundation work consisted of the installation of a soldier beam and lagging wall requiring the drilling in of 50′ long H-beam soldier piles through very difficult drilling conditions, including nested boulders and cobbles. With the support of excavation in place, excavation of the nearly 300,000 tons of regulated soils could be removed from the site and disposed of. Massive spread footings were installed to pick up the columns for the arena structure, followed by the construction of the foundation walls. The work site was divided up into four major quadrants and progressed from the eastern end in a counterclockwise direction. Steel erection for the site began on schedule and continued as the foundation work was completed. With the major foundation work completed, the slab on grade could be poured in order to complete the work.
